Cosmetic Gynaecology

Background

As a doctor, I have been specialising in women’s health for over 20 years and have been a Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon for the past 12 years.

What concerns me most is the current vogue for plastic surgeons to carry out internal gynaecological surgery, which is what vaginoplasty, otherwise known as pelvic floor surgery, is. This surgery is not just simply ‘vaginal tightening’, as is all too often explained to a patient, but requires a careful consideration of the changes in shape and length of the vagina. As part of the holistic service that I consider essential, I will also offer you a confidential session with Sarah Colling (see team highlight) to explore any psychosexually related issues that you may have.

Labial Surgery

Labial surgery, or labiaplasty, is a very popular procedure and is not just carried out for cosmetic reasons. The labia can become large, painful and pigmented. This can, quite understandably, affect your confidence which, in turn, can detrimentally affect your sex life.

Labia vary enormously, but it is your own personal perception that is most important. At our consultation, I will carry out a detailed assessment of your labia and advise you fully about labial surgery, so that you have a full understanding of the procedure.

To date, I have carried out over 200 labial reconstructive procedures.

Vaginal Tightening

The main muscles on the outside of the vagina meet to form the pudendal body. This group of muscles is often overstretched when your baby’s head ‘crowns’ at the base of the vagina. The effect of this overstretching is to reduce the frictional experience that accompanies penetration during intercourse which leads, in turn, to physically feeling less sexual pleasure.

Pudendal body repair will reconstitute this muscle group and improve not only yours, but your partner’s, sexual enjoyment. The procedure can be combined with labial and vaginal reconstructive surgery.

Perineal Refashioning

Sometimes the area between the vagina and the anus can look quite disfiguring following an episiotomy or the repair of a tear. This can affect your confidence and understandably often your libido as well. It normally occurs with pudendal body weakness.

This operation will improve the cosmetic appearance of the perineum.

Vaginal Reconstructive Surgery

Most of us agree that childbirth is probably the most rewarding experience a woman will ever have. However, the physiological and anatomical changes of pregnancy result in loosening of both the vagina and the supporting tissues. This is naturally variable from woman to woman, and to some extent some women who have more elastic tissues are at greater risk.

The loss of vaginal muscle tone also varies individually and can also occur after the birth of your first child.

The subsequent loss of muscle tone, which results in less friction during intercourse, can reduce the libido and the enjoyment of sex with your partner.

My aim with the surgery that I undertake is to improve the shape and structure of the internal aspects of the vagina and to reproduce the pre-pregnancy anatomy – to get you back to how you were! This procedure can be carried out at the same time as labial or perineal surgery.
